What is Shadow and Bone All About? (***Spoiler Alert Ahead!***)
Shadow and Bone is based in the fictional universe of Grishaverse (and they have their own languages). The Grishaverse is full of people from the Army of Ravka and also has some Crows of Ketterdam.
The plot revolves around Alina Starkov who accidentally discovers her powers. She is a “Grisha” and has the power to summon the light. This makes her the focal point of conflict amongst the Ravka, Shu Han, and Fjerda. As the story progresses, Alina tries to tame and control her power (much like Elsa from Disney’s Frozen).
Alina’s main objective is to destroy a sea of darkness created by Black Heretic. This dark sea, known as the Shadow Fold, is quite old and is inhabited by Volcra.
Alongside the main plot, the narrative also switches to tell the story of Crows and their conflict for power with Pekka Rollins in Ketterdam.
The plot blends together fantasy elements with the romantic ones in a whole different universe. The costume, makeup, dialog, and screenplay convince the audience that Grishaverse exists.
Shadow and Bone Cast
The cast of the show was well-selected and all the actors were lauded for their performance. The main cast has Jessie Mein Li starring as Alina Starkov, the ‘Grisha’ who can summon the light. She is an orphan and also served as an assistant cartographer of the Royal Corps of Surveyors in the First Army. The young Alina is played by Kaylan Teague. Baghra, Alina’s mentor, is played beautifully by Zoe Wanamaker.
Archie Renaux can be seen in the role of Malyen Orestev (better known as ‘Mal’ throughout the show). Mal is Alina’s childhood best friend and an orphan tracker in the First Army. Mal, as a child, is played by Cody Molko.
General Kirigan (also known as the Aleksander and The Darkling) is played by Ben Barnes. As opposed to Alina, General Kirigan has the power to summon shadows.
The leader of the Crows, Kaz Brekker (often called Dirtyhands in the series) is played by Freddy Carter.
We can see Amita Suman in the shoes of Inej Ghafa (tactfully nicknamed as the Wraith). She is one of the Crows members. Another member of the Crows is Jesper Fahey, a talented sharpshooter. This character is played by Kit Young.
Shadow and Bone: The Recurring Cast
The first name that pops up in the recurring roles list is Zoya the Squaller. This character is brought to life by Sujaya Dasgupta. One more Squaller, Nadia, is played by Gabrielle Brooks.
Ivan (the Heartrender), played by Simon Sears, is another well-loved character from the series. Other Heartrenders, Feydor and Nina Zenik, are played by Julian Kostov and Danielle Galligan.
Meanwhile, Howard Charles is seen in the role of Arken, the Conductor. Matthias, a Fjerdan Drüskelle, is played by Calahan Skogman. King of Ravka’s advisor (also called The Apparat), is played by Kevin Eldon in the series.
Dasiy Head appears as Genya Safin (also known as the Tailor). The Inferni is played by Marie and Luke Pasqualino appears as David Kostyk who is a Durast.

Shadow and Bone Book: What is it About?
The Netflix series has mostly adhered to the original plot of the book. The ‘Shadow and Bone’ starts with Alina and Mal taking a stroll through the dark Unsea (Shadow Folds) to get some supplies. They are attacked by the Velcro. And it is during this attack, that Alina discovers her Grisha abilities to summon light. The rest of the plot is more or less similar to the eight episodes of the series.
The book, ‘Shadow and Bone,’ is followed by ‘Siege and Storm’ and ends with ‘Ruin and Rising’. Published in 2012, the series was concluded in 2014 with the release of the final book. All of Bardugo’s books have generally positive reviews. The first book is gripping enough to keep you turning pages until the last page of the series.
The duology, Six of Crows and the Crooked Kingdom are also based in the Grishaverse.
