The frontwoman of In This Moment, Maria Brink is one of the most prominent female names in heavy metal world. But how well do you know her? Here’s everything you, as a fan of Maria Brink, would want to know about the talented singer & songwriter.
Maria Brink’s Personal Life
Born in Schenectady, New York, on December 17, 1977, Maria Diane Brink had a very troubled childhood. Although she has never talked about her childhood in detail, it is clear that she suffered horrific abuse at the hands of her father and was also abandoned by him at an early age.
She spent most of her childhood with her mother, who was a drug addict. She later helped her mother overcome addiction.
The traumatic events that were taking place in Maria’s personal life naturally affected her personality and studies as well.
She struggled with depression and was considered a burn-out in high school; no one at the school thought she was going to graduate. Though she did graduate from high school, her problems didn’t end here.
She got pregnant at the age of 14 and gave birth to her only son Davion at 15. Soon after her son was born, Maria moved out of her house and rented an apartment.
To raise her son and pay the bills, she started working at n a launderette. While life wasn’t easy for Maria Brink, nothing could make her passion for music die. In addition to doing different small jobs for making a living for herself and her son, she started working with local band projects.
Career Development
The Beginning of Brink’s Professional Career
At the age of 18, she joined a local Albany-based band named Pulse as a singer. The band would perform opening acts for several popular bands, like Coal Chamber and Sevendust. However, it didn’t last long. Maria’s singing career came to a halt when the band broke up in 2002. But, she didn’t lose hope.
Instead, she took a risk and made the huge decision of moving to Los Angeles to pursue her passion for music. Just after 6 weeks of Pulse’s split, Maria Brink had relocated to Los Angeles along with her son.
Things didn’t turn out any easier in LA as well. For two years, Maria’s singing career was limited to performing in bars and cafés. She also had to do small jobs at different stores in order to make enough money to support herself and her son.
Dying Star
After about two years of struggle, Brink finally got the break she was looking for. However, the opportunity didn’t present itself; she had to turn the tables in her favor. It so happened that she got to know that Chris Howorth (the current guitarist of In This Moment) was auditioning singers for his band Dying Star.
She went for the audition, but Chris rejected her without auditioning just because she was a woman.
At that time, it was believed that only men could perform heavy metal or screamo music. However, Maria refused to surrender to the prevailing gender bias in the metal music industry.
She burst into Dying Star’s rehearsal one day, grabbed the mic straight away, and started singing. Upon listening to Maria Brink, Chris Howorth realized how talented she was and how big of a mistake he made by rejecting her. He apologized to Brink and signed her up as the lead vocalist of the band.
Dying Star gained recognition from its very first song Drifting. However, the band didn’t last long and split just after two gigs.
The Birth of In This Moment
In 2005, Maria Brink and Chris Howorth joined hands, once again, and formed a new metal band with the name of In This Moment. The band only recorded demos and posted them on MySpace, which then was world’s largest social networking website, until it was discovered by Rob Nicholson.
Maria Brink’s Rise to Fame
Maria Brink’s journey to fame started after Rob Nicholson became the manager of In This Moment because it was only after he joined the band that they started working on their first album, Beautiful Tragedy.

Some of them include Rockfest, Download Festival, Rock on the Range, Ozzfest, Aftershock, Music as a Weapon, and Carnival of Madness.
In early 2019, the band announced that they were working on another album, titled Mother. Earlier, it was announced that the album might be released by August; however, it has not been released yet.
