Leighton Marissa Meester was born on April 9, 1986, in Fort Worth, Texas. Her parents are writer Constance Lynn Haas and real estate broker Douglas Jay Meester.
Leighton has an older brother, Douglas Logan, and a younger brother, Alexander.
At the time of Leighton Meester’s birth, her parents were serving time in federal prison due to their involvement in smuggling marijuana from Jamaica to the US. Constance gave birth to Leighton in a hospital and cared for her for three months in a halfway house before going back to prison.
While her parents were in prison, Leighton was cared for by her paternal grandparents. Her parents eventually separated in 1992.
When she was 11, Leighton moved to New York City with her moth. She went to the Professional Children’s School, then started working as a model with Wilhelmina International.

Her mother, Constance, made a counterclaim. Constance claimed that there was a contract wherein Meester supposedly promised $10,000 in financial support, but she only received $7,500.
